More horror from Underground

“We launched Ghost House Underground as a way to get more horror out there,” says Rob Tapert, who partnered with Sam Raimi on the collection. “This is something you’ve heard before, but there’s always going to be a market for horror.” The pair previously has worked together creatively on such horror franchises as The Grudge and Evil Dead. “We wanted to get a good mix of titles for Ghost House Underground—we’ve got a couple of international titles too. We’re not opposed to foreign-language films, though they’re tougher to market in America,” he says. The collection is being distributed by Lionsgate. “Lionsgate has a great understanding of the home entertainment market,” Tapert says, “and they’re willing to do the hard work to get their product into the marketplace.” —Laurence Lerman

Indie labels partner for scares

Elite Entertainment has made a deal to have its titles distributed by Brain Damage Films. Brain Damage will distribute all of Elite’s catalog and upcoming releases. The first new title under the deal will be Devil Girl, a psychological thriller to be released on DVD in the first quarter. “It’s encouraging to know that in these economic times, two independent labels within the same genre can form a relationship that will continue to pump out both catalog and new programming,” says Vini Bancalari, president of Elite. Elite catalog titles include Night of the Living Dead, I Spit on Your Grave, Fearmakers Collection and Creature Features. —Cindy Spielvogel
