Classic chills

Anchor Bay Entertainment has a quartet of scary movies arriving at the end of September: Breathing Room, Bryan Loves You, Five Across the Eyes and The Vanguard. They’ll be followed in October by Jack Brooks, Monster Slayer, a film with a plot that pays homage to the horror films of the ’80s, even including A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Robert Englund in the cast. Rounding out the horror slate is a 30th anniversary set of films from the Halloween franchise, including the original 1978 film, the extended version that has been out of print for several years, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers and the documentary Halloween: 25 Years of Terror. New versions of old scares

Lionsgate is making sure September is a scary month. The company has a full slate of horror titles being released during the month, ensuring that plenty of films in the genre will be available before Halloween. They include the psychological thriller The Morgue, the true-story-inspired Son of Sam, a new cut of the 2003 film House of the Dead Director’s Cut: Funny Version, a new Copycat movie starring Chloe Snyder, The Legend of Bloody Mary starring Paul Preiss and Nicole Aiken and the lost classic Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat Special Edition starring David Carradine and Bruce Campbell. —C.S.

The Morgue Six strangers are brought together through a series of unusual events; Son of Sam Ulli Lommel presents a fictionalized account of the New York serial killer. Both street Sept. 2, prebook Aug. 6; DVD $26.98 each

House of the Dead Director’s Cut: Funny Version Director Uwe Boll turns horror into humor with this comedic rendition of his zombie classic. Street Sept. 9, prebook Aug. 13; DVD $19.98

Copycat (DVD $26.98) Tormented by the desire to find his mother’s murderer, a journalist investigates the only clue the killer left behind; The Legend of Bloody Mary (DVD $26.98) A priest/archaeologist uses his detective skills to figure out what happened to a grieving man’s dead sister; Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat Special Edition (DVD $19.98) A community of vampires live in a remote, dusty desert town. Fear for the family

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has a variety of scary movies on the way. Sarah Landon and the Paranormal Hour is one of the few horror films suitable for viewing by most members of the family. Buried Alive is a feature-length movie culled from the episodes of the interactive daily Web series of the same name from FearNet. Icons of Horror 3 is a collection containing films from horror master Christopher Lee. Completing the slate is the horror comedy Zombie Strippers. —C.S.

Sarah Landon and the Paranormal Hour When a woman learns a town’s dark secret, she finds herself in the middle of a haunting mystery that involves two brothers, the local psychic and an evil spirit. Street Sept. 9, prebook Aug. 7; DVD $24.96

Buried Alive A handsome 20-year-old man is buried alive in this tale reminiscent of The Blair Witch Project. Street Sept. 30, prebook Aug. 28; DVD $24.96

Spooky slate

Ryko Distribution has an eclectic assortment of scary movies arriving from a host of labels specializing in various types of horror, from the harmless to the hideous. They include an uncut and uncensored version of Blue Underground’s Possession, which was originally cut by almost 45 minutes for its U.S. release. From Halo Eight are serial killer film The Devil’s Muse and gory Pink Eye. Pop Cinema offers humorous horror film Necroville. The Redemption USA label has two erotic horror titles, Satanic Sluts II and Black Magic Rites. Troma Entertainment is releasing a 20th anniversary edition of horror comedy Redneck Zombies. Finally, in October, from Grindhouse Releasing come the noteworthy films The Beyond and Pieces, along with Halo-8's unique DVD game, Slumber Party Slaughterhouse. –C.S.
