Gaiam grows fitness product

Gaiam, the leading supplier of fitness DVDs, is continuing to make deals for more titles and stake out new territory at retail. The company, which is the category captain for fitness at Target, recently added 4 feet of space at the retailer for a total of 12 feet, according to Bill Sondheim, president of entertainment and worldwide distribution for Gaiam. Eight feet are for Gaiam’s combined DVD and fitness equipment product and another 4 feet is for fitness DVDs from a variety of fitness suppliers, he says. Instead of in the DVD section, the product is carried in the sporting goods section at Target, in what could become a trend at other retailers. Another deal made by Gaiam is for the company to distribute Biggest Loser-branded fitness equipment, although Lionsgate continues to distribute the DVDs. Also coming soon from Gaiam is combined DVD and equipment product based on Winsor Pilates. Upcoming Gaiam DVDs will include a new Rodney Yee title, Yoga for Beginners. —Cindy Spielvogel

Serving up healthy living

Acorn Media’s Acacia fitness and wellness label has a new franchise in conjunction with Cooking Light magazine. Designed as both an exercise and diet solution for weight loss, the new DVDs come with a 16-page booklet offering eating tips and recipes from the magazine. Weight Loss: Pilates and Weight Loss: Cardio Sculpt arrive in early January, just in time to help customers with New Year’s resolutions. Joining the two titles will be the next release from top-selling Acacia yoga star Shiva Rea, Creative Core + Upper Body. —C.S.

Anchor Bay titles dance to DVD

Anchor Bay Entertainment will release new titles in two of its fitness lines. Dance Off the Inches: Country Line Dance and Element: Tai Chi for Beginners are due in February. Anchor Bay also will have a cross-promotion this summer with Kellogg’s Special K on behalf of the 10 Minute Solution line. Part of the “Lose Up to an Inch From Your Waist—in 2 Weeks” campaign, the promotion will be supported by TV and print ads and will include a photo of Jessica Smith, star of 10 Minute Solution: Quick Tummy Toner, on more than 43 million boxes of Special K. —C.S.
