TALKBACK

Run for Your Life

By Ed Grant -- Video Business,10/13/2008

SCREEN MEDIA/UNIVERSAL

Street: Oct. 28
Prebook: now
> Sentimental tribute to Big Apple marathon man Fred Lebow.

The founder of the New York Marathon, running enthusiast Fred Lebow, is profiled in this well-crafted and moving documentary. A “transplanted Transylvanian,” Lebow started the marathon in 1970 and expanded it in 1976 from a run around Central Park to a grueling journey around all five New York City boroughs. Filmmaker Judd Ehrlich does an excellent job of conveying the “searching” aspects of the ’70s and delivers an extremely poignant third act, as Lebow is shown taking part in his own marathon in 1992 while afflicted with brain cancer.

Shelf Talk: Run for Your Life will appeal to New Yorkers and nostalgia lovers, who will enjoy its terrific view of the Big Apple in the hippie and post-disco eras. Outside of the city, the film will appeal to joggers and gym-rats of every stripe, as it focuses on a man who found a cure for all ills in exercise.
