AUG. 14 | The videogame industry continues at an impressive pace, according to NPD July results, as year-to-date hardware and software sales have climbed 35% over the same 2007 frame to $9.47 billion.

For July, industry sales totaled $1.19 billion, which is 28% ahead of where the business stood that month last year.

Monthly hardware sales rose 17% to $446.9 million; software lifted 41% to $591.1 million.

Nintendo’s Wii shows few signs of letting go of its dominant next-generation console position, moving 555,000 units in July. Second place PlayStation 3 was far from close behind at 224,900 units sold. Xbox 360 clocked in at 204,800 units.

It also wasn’t really a contest with the handheld systems. Leader Nintendo DS sold 608,400 units, easily beating the PlayStation Portable, with 221,700 units sold.

Top 5 game titles in July were NCAA Football ’09 for the Xbox 360, selling 397,600 units; Wii Fit with balance board, 369,600 units; Guitar Hero: On Tour for Nintendo DS, 309,700; Wii Play with remote, 284,000; and NCAA Football ’09 for the PS3, 242,500.
