JULY 26 | Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is the first to plant its flag in what’s expected to be the most crowded fourth quarter on record, staking out Dec. 4 for the DVD and Blu-ray Disc releases of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.
The third film in the Pirates series starring Johnny Depp, Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom has grossed $946 million globally and is expected to be one of the top sellers on DVD this year. Previous Pirates DVD releases Dead Man’s Chest and Curse of the Black Pearl looted $293.8 million and $298 million, respectively, according to Video Business research. Both also were released the first week of December.
Disney will release the film in three versions: a one-disc set ($29.99 suggested retail price), a two-disc set ($34.99 SRP) and a two-disc Blu-ray edition ($35.99 SRP).
The two-disc sets will include a near endless list of extras going behind-the-scenes on set and detailing pirate lore. Documentaries include “Keith & the Captain,” “Hoist the Colors: Masters of Design,” “Anatomy of a Scene: The Maelstrom,” “The Tale of the Multiple Jacks,” “Inside the Brethren Court,” “The Pirate Code: Revealed” and more, in addition to a blooper reel.
The two-disc 75GB Blu-ray release will include all features on the standard DVD set re-mastered in high-definition plus BD-Java feature Enter the Maelstrom, which gives an interactive peek at the scene. The Jolly Roger host will navigate users through animated menus on the Blu-ray disc.
