APRIL 22 | The Video Software Dealers Association will name Sylvester Stallone the "Action Star of the Millennium" at its July 16-18 convention at the Rio Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
"I'm very, very humbled by that," Stallone told VB sister magazine Video Premieres in an interview for the May issue. "There's a lot of competition out there," he said, noting with a laugh that he'll have a lock on the award "for the next 1,000 years."
The honor coincides with the special edition DVD release of The Rambo Trilogy by Artisan Home Entertainment on May 28. The VSDA will present the honor during the convention's opening ceremony on July 16. Stallone is expected to be on hand to accept the award.
"As an actor, writer and director, Mr. Stallone has endowed his artistic achievements with excellence and has created some of the most memorable characters in cinema history," said VSDA president Bo Andersen. "Rocky Balboa and John Rambo are cinema cornerstones in American culture and have become synonymous with courage and rough-hewn integrity. Because of DVD technology and the overwhelming popularity of home video, his numerous films will continue to be enjoyed by film buffs for generations to come."
The Rambo Trilogy, which includes First Blood, Rambo: First Blood II and Rambo III, will include extensive extras such as interviews and documentaries. Stallone co-wrote and starred in all three films.
Stallone got his start playing prizefighter Rocky Balboa in Rocky (MGM Home Entertainment) from his own screenplay. The film won the Academy Award for best picture in 1976, and Stallone went on to play the boxer in four sequels for the studio.
His other films include Paradise Alley (1978, Universal), F.I.S.T. (1978, MGM), Rhinestone (1984, Fox), Staying Alive (1983, Paramount), Nighthawks (1981, Universal), Victory (1981, Paramount), Tango & Cash (1989, Warner), Lock Up (1989, Columbia), Demolition Man (1993, Warner), The Specialist (1994, Warner), Assassins (1995, Warner), Daylight (1996, Universal), Cop Land (1997, Miramax Buena Vista), Get Carter (2000, Warner) and Driven (2001, Warner).
He has completed filming Warner Bros.' Avenging Angelo, in which he stars with Madeleine Stowe.
