A BD Centerfold!
April 22, 2008
Circuit City devotes an entire page to sale-priced catalog BD titles in its current weekly ad. Such promotions seem to be few and far between, as there is no second format to battle or an obvious holiday to market around.
Technically, a centerfold would extend across two pages. But having titles spread across the whole page is a sexy enough campaign for BD.
I think it would serve studios and retailers well to keep a fire lit under their catalog releases, which still are lagging behind their new release counterparts in sales.
Such promotions don't need to necessarily eat into studio/retail profits. Circuit City has not drastically slashed prices for the week - consumers will save between $5 and $15 from original pricing. The retail has the whole lot, including Ocean's 13, 300, Fantastic 4 and The Devil Wears Prada, at $19.99. Just the fact that the page features titles from top to bottom, and side to side sends a strong message that BD is a legitimate category. An ad reader might think, 'It's OK to buy a BD player, there are hundreds of titles to choose from!"
Still, Circuit City delivers two pages of standard def DVD offerings to the one for Blu-ray. But I say this is as good as start as any to give BD the treatment it requires.
