PS3 Rocks Out in the Desert, Leaves Blu in the Dust

April 25, 2008

In a bringin' it to the streets marketing blitz, Sony will be hosting two PS3 tents at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Indio, Calif.
Fest-goers will be able to sample the latest PS3 games SingStar, LittleBigPlanet and Gran Turismo 5 at this long-running event near Palm Springs. Featured Coachella bands MGMT and Battles will be stopping by and playing the games with fans as well.
That is all fine and wonderful. It almost makes me kick myself more for not trekking out to Coachella, a three-day explosion of incredible bands. But after five years of 100 degree heat, porta-potties and $3 water bottles, I figured I'd take a rest this year.
I digress. Here is the main problem I have with Sony's PS3 at Coachella campaign: If you are setting up camp in front of tens of thousands of people, you might as well show everything that PS3 has to offer. There is no mention of Blu-ray in a press release I saw announcing PS3's involvement at Coachella.
If you're going to have someone as cool as MGMT and Battles (truly crazy wonderful acts, trust me!) play video games at this tent, then why can't you have them stand there as you show off PS3's just-launched BD-Live Web interactivity? Maybe Sony was afraid the heat would make the display equipment self-combust? That's possible, sure, but I say that would be a risk well taken. Coachella fans want to stay on top of the latest in music, so it's not a stretch that they'd want to stay on top of the latest in entertainment.
I guess there's always next year!
