Uni To Bow Out With Atonement?
March 3, 2008

It looks like Atonement may very well be Universal's last HD DVD release on March 18. I asked as much last week, when VB discovered Paramount would bow out of the format this month with March 4 releases Things We Lost in the Fire and Into the Wild. But I didn't get a comment from Uni at the time.
High-fives though, to the folks at HighDefDigest.com who digged up some helpful dirt indicating that yes indeed, Atonement is Universal's final HD DVD release. After hearing that the studio had pulled the plug on the Charlie Wilson's War HD DVD from its spring slate, HighDefDigest pressed a Uni rep for more info. According to the site, the rep said Atonement was it, as far as Uni new releases on HD DVD.
It seems that HD DVD could be significantly drying up at retail this month, as maybe ironically? Warner is the only major still releasing titles in the format past March. Warner's decision to go Blu-exclu kicked off all this end of format war business in the first place! Also, Circuit City told VB today that it was hoping to clear out HD DVD inventory in the next few weeks.
As of now, Uni isn't formally commenting on Atonement being its last HD DVD. Hopefully, I'll be able to update this post soon with an official word from the studio.
