Vondering About Vonda Shepard?

November 2, 2009

A very likable and lively singer-songwriter, Vonda Shepard was first introduced to mainstream American audiences as a regular on the first five seasons of the hit TV show Ally McBeal, where she portrayed a (you guessed it!) performing singer/songwriter at the local bar where the show’s characters went to hang out after a hard day at the office.

The songs Vonda performed at the bar—all her own compositions—launched her musical career. And now those songs are seeing some notable action again with Fox’s recent release of Ally McBeal: The Complete Series and Ally McBeal: Season One on DVD (and Season One on VOD), along with Vonda’s latest record, Sony Legacy’s The Best of Ally McBeal-The Songs of Vonda Shepard. The audio collection

offers 12 tracks, including “Searchin’ My Soul”; “Chances Are,” a duet between Shepard and Ally co-star Robert Downey Jr.; “Tell Him”; “Something About You,” which has not yet been released on CD; and a new song, “I Know Better."

Not that Shepard hasn’t been plenty busy since Ally’s final episode was broadcast back  in 2002.

“I’ve done a lot since then. I’ve got eleven albums out, including a live one—that’s a pretty long and great career,” Shepard told me in a recent phone interview. “After Ally faded, I’m sort of re-emerged as an artist in the purest sense of the word. That said, to step back into the Ally world is fun and nostalgic for me.”

And though Vonda took part in a two-part Ally McBeal reunion on Good Morning America a couple of weeks back (that actually aired today!), Vonda didn’t have to wait to bump into her fellow co-workers from the old days.

“I’m still friendly with lots of them--Calista is still my bud she said, she said. “And if I saw Greg Gurman on the street, I’d give him a big hug.”
