P2P Downloads Coming to PS3?
May 7, 2007

Word on the Web is that Sony will introduce a peer-to-peer movie download service for the PlayStation 3, which some are speculating could mean high definition movie downloads. Rival Xbox already offers high definition movie downloads through the Xbox 360, so Sony's already playing catchup. But integrating P2P delivery into the service could allow Sony to offer faster and cheaper downloads.

P2P download services are becoming increasingly popular with studios because they allow companies to send large movie files over the Internet quickly and cheaply. Fansite Sony Protection Group, which first reported the rumor, says Sony will use P2P technology from Grouper, which Sony acquired last year. Sony Protection Group says the P2P service will be launched as part of PlayStation Home, a virtual user community.
