More High Def Stats
July 24, 2007
Engadget HD uncovered a couple of high def DVD sites that feature all kinds of sales and release numbers on Blu-ray and HD DVD. It's not clear exactly who's backing the sites -
Blu-ray Stats and
HD DVD Stats - or exactly where the information comes from (though the site itself points its finger to the "Internet." Helpful, right?)
That said, the numbers look pretty similar to ones released by studios in terms of sales. The sites feature a couple charts with Nielsen data showing weekly sales split between both formats. Both also include codec information on releases, studio, sales price and pie charts showing studio share based on releases, not sales.
Both sites are registered to Dave Cowl of Rhobot Corp. of Sunnyvale, Calif. In the FAQ section, the site backer says the site isn't backed by either high def camp, but acknowledges he leans in Blu-ray's favor. He's also quite possibly British (note the spelling of "favour" in the FAQ section) and amusingly straightforward for a somewhat anonymous backer of Web sites in the midde of a contentious industry battle for high def supremacy.
On the FAQ page, to the question "Is this site 100% accurate," the answer is a "Probably not."
But it's got some interesting numbers nonetheless.
