Unlimited downloads by subscription
June 16, 2009
Universal Music has made a deal with Virgin Media in the U.K. to partner on an unlimited music download subscription service. According to our sister publication Variety, users of the service will be able stream and download music, and transfer the digital files to any device they want.
Sounds pretty perfect for the consumer. Variety says the user all will be able to keep the songs for as long as they like.
Could this ever happen with movies and TV shows? I'm not sure we'll ever see it, but who knows.
Netflix seems to have found success with its streaming subscription service, but the true test will be if they break out the streaming service and DVD rental service in two separate fees.
But the movie/TV industry is still trying to figure out how to make money online. The difference, of course, is the need to be able to play content on a TV, and the factor of storage space after you've paid your $14.99 to download a permanent copy. Those big files will fill up a harddrive fast.
The music industry moved online before movies. So, it's good to keep an eye on what's successful there and see if it'll work for videos.
