Blockbuster's Online Preview of Great DebatorsDecember 19, 2007 There's a definite change at Blockbuster under CEO Jim Keyes. Big Blue is embracing the web as a vehicle to distribute niche content and strengthen studio partnerships.Following last week's announcement that Blockbuster will provide an exclusive online release window for Jackass 2.5, which it will also retain rental rights to, Blockbuster yesterday announced a deal to offer exclusive content online for The Great Debators, staring Denzel Washington and Forrest Whitaker, prior to its theatrical release on Christmas Day. Blockbuster will also have exclusive DVD rental rights to the movie in an arrangement with The Weinstein Co. Blockbuster's special features of behind-the-scenes making of the movie and interviews with cast and filmmakers, including Oprah Winfrey is available at: http://www.blockbuster.com/thegreatdebaters through Jan. 7. The movie, released in U.S. theaters by MGM, chronicles the career of Professor Melvin Tolson (Denzel Washington), a brilliant but volatile debate team coach who shapes a group of underdog students from a small African-American college into a historically elite debate team. A controversial figure, Professor Tolson challenged the social mores of the time and was under constant fire for his unconventional and ferocious teaching methods as well as his radical political views. "We're excited to present a special preview of 'The Great Debaters,'" said Joyce Woodward, senior vice-president for Blockbuster Inc. "Giving movie lovers special access to great entertainment is an important part of our mission at Blockbuster." Posted by Ned Randolph on December 19, 2007 | Comments (1)
