iTunes May Add Rentals
May 16, 2007
At its shareholder meeting last week, Apple hinted that it will add rental movie downloads to iTunes, according to an analyst who attended the event. "Timing of this is difficult to determine, but we would expect [iTunes video rentals] sometime in 2008," PiperJaffray analyst Gene Munster wrote in a note to investors, Apple Insider reported.
If Apple were to add rentals, it might allow the studio to add more new release movies to the site and also make more content available for the Apple TV, which transfers those downloads to the TV. Right now, Apple only offers new release movies from Disney. Apple has reportedly refused to pay DVD wholesale prices on new releases that other studios are demanding. Disney, Paramount and Lionsgate all sell catalog films on the site, but as Disney CEO Bob Iger noted in the company's earnings call last week, new releases are the biggest sellers on iTunes.
