Amazon: Champion of the indie film?

One may not associate Amazon.com with "indie cred" but it's not like the world's largest Internet retailer isn't trying.

Last week, Amazon and New York-based independent film producer Cinetic Rights Management reached an agreement in which Amazon will exclusively sell Cinetic's film titles on DVD and for digital download.

Amazon and Cinetic will release about 20 films a month, first on DVD, then through both Amazon's Video on Demand download and on Amazon's CreateSpace, which produces DVDs on demand, Cinetic said last week. Some of the titles to be released this month include the documentary The Times of Harvey Milk and the Stanley Tucci-starring A Modern Affair.

Amazon has been trying to position CreateSpace, formerly known as CustomFlix Labs, as a place where independent filmmakers and distributors can sell films to the home-entertainment market. In June, the Tribeca Film Institute said it would ease the digital transfer of hard-to-find titles by using CreateSpace as its DVD-on-demand partner. Later that month, HBO said it would start selling some of its documentaries on CreateSpace, which Amazon acquired in 2005.
