RealNetworks plans cheaper Kaleidescape
April 29, 2009
At the RealDVD hearing Tuesday, RealNetworks CEO Rob Glaser demonstrated a DVD player in development with a hard drive that consumers could rip and save hundreds of DVDs to for later playback,
CNET reports. Code-named Facet, the player would work similar to Kaleidescape's high end home theater, which allows consumers to store their DVD library on a server for playback. Kaliedescape has so far prevailed in court against DVD licensing body the DVD-CCA, but the case is on appeal.
"Kaleidescapes are like Porsches," CNET quoted Glaser as saying during testimony. "They're very expensive. We thought we could develop Chevys, a $300 product that could replace a person's DVD player."
Today, Glaser testified that studios could encrypt rental DVDs differently from sellthrough DVDs to prevent people from using RealDVD to burn movies from them, according to
Wired here.
The judge closed the court to the public this afternoon as an expert testified about copy protection system CSS.
