RealDVD developed by Ukranian hackers, studios say
April 24, 2009
Lawyers for the major studios said in court Friday that RealNetworks worked with Ukranian hackers to develop DVD ripping software RealDVD,
according to reporters covering the San Francisco trial over RealDVDs legality.
Studio lawyers also contended Friday that consumers don't have the right to make backup copies of DVDs, according to
Wired's Threat Level blog, which has one of the more inciteful takes on everything going on in court. Wired says RealNetworks contends the studios are worried that RealDVD will compete with Digital Copy they've begun offering on discs.
Studio lawyers asked the judge Friday afternoon to seal the hearing from the public to protect details about how studios encrypt DVDs,
CNET reported.
I'll post more links here as news from the trial comes out over the next few days.
