CNN appeals to the mobile set
October 6, 2009
CNN has launched a news application for iPhone users as the Time Warner-owned news network looks to capitalize on the rapidly expanding smartphone user base.
CNN's mobile application includes features such as live streaming video, on-demand video of particular CNN shows and news and weather personalized for certain regions, Time Warner said in a statement last week. The application, which can be used on both the iPhone and iTouch, costs $1.99 on Apple's iTunes store.
The network is looking to boost ratings and exposure by catering to an expanding base of users of smartphones such as the iPhone and Research in Motion's Blackberry. The number of U.S. mobile-video users has surged about 70% in the past year, while the number of Americans accessing the Internet with their mobile devices has jumped 34%, Nielsen said in two reports released last month.
