HD DVD Codebreakers Strike Digg
May 2, 2007

An all out Internet riot broke out on Digg.com yesterday after the site took down stories giving away HD DVD encryption keys. Users responded by putting up a whole front page of stories with the HD DVD keys, reserving web sites with the numbers and creating a song onYouTube, giving the keys far wider distribution than if they were merely in a Digg story. The keys are even a tag now on Slashdot.

Digg responded to readers in a blog post titled with the keys. Digg said it took down the stories after getting a cease and desist letter from the AACS camp. "But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.

"If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying"

No word yet from the AACS camp on what all this means, but I'll update when I hear from them.
