Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on
December 26, 2006

With Christmas brought my husband opening the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on I had rushed out and bought last month when it first went on sale -- so our Christmas Day was spent watching movies in high-def and trying out the interactivity. (I had bought him the 360 for his birthday, so this seemed like the natural next gift. And I'll admit it was killing me to have it hiding under our bed that long. He almost got it Thanksgiving!)

On our 37-inch Sony WEGA, the high-def picture is great, but not a vast difference from standard DVD, which looks really good on our TV. But we could still tell that the HD DVD picture was tighter, and our most immediate impression was that the color saturation is better.

But by far the most exciting part of our new gadget was being able to use the menus while we were watching the movie. It might seem a small thing, but when you're watching King Kong and really just want to get to the good stuff, it's fabulous to be able to skip to them on the boat without having to stop the movie.

We were disappointed when we tried to turn on the video commentary for Mission: Impossible III in the middle of the movie and find the disc automatically begin the film again.

Now we're looking forward to the really cool special features.

Merry Christmas!
