Hatching The Covenant
October 24, 2006
Halloween is around the corner, but you'll have to wait until Jan. 2 for the witches The Covenant to pop into your home. Sony will release the movie on DVD ($28.95) and Blu-ray ($38.95).
You might have missed this in theaters (I have to admit I did), so here's the lowdown on the movie's premise: A few rising stars (Steven Strait from
Sky High, Sebastian Stan from
Red Doors, Laura Ramsey from
Lords of Dogtown and Taylor Kitsch from
Snakes on a Plane) are descendents of the Salem witches and have inherited their powers. But there's a catch (isn't there always?)! When the witches use their powers, they age prematurely.
The bottom lineThe Covenant was produced by the team behind
Underworld, and I personally like
Underworld. It's good to see a new take on the old vampire story. So, hopefully
The Covenant will have a new take on witches, but will it live up to Anne Rice's witch series?
The special features aren't spectacular: a director's commentary and a behind-the-scenes featurette. But the packaging will have an "eye-catching" foil o-ring, so the press materials say.
The Covenant grossed $23 million in theaters, but with horror scaring up some serious profit right now, it's primed to overperform on disc.
