Reno 911!: Miami
April 18, 2007

The big-screen outing of Comedy Central's  COPS spoof comes to DVD on June 19 (prebook May 23) in the theatrical and unrated versions (that's the unrated box art on the right), both priced at $29.98.

Reno 911!: Miami grossed $20.3 million, and I dare say it will do even better on DVD. I didn't see the movie when it was in theaters, but I've seen the show a few times and it plays very well on the small screen.

Better yet, Fox got creative with the unrated DVD. The extras include three commentaries, which you'd think sounds a bit over the top for a parody, but Fox took a page from the Spinal Tap book and did two commentaries with the characters. Lt. Dangle, Deputy Junior, Deputy Wiegel and Deputy Williams chat in one, with Deputy Garcia, Deputy Johnson, Deputy Jones and Deputy Kimball in the other.

The third commentary is with director/writer Robert Ben Garant and writers Thomas Lennon and Kerri Kenney-Silver -- which actually means Deputy Junior, Lt. Dangle and Deputy Wiegel as themselves, so it still has plenty of potential for laughs.

There's also six extended scenes (with optional commentary from Garant, Lennon and Kenney-Silver), four public service announcements (these don't sound quite as boring, though -- "Shut the F*** Up," "Shooting in the Theater," "Illegal Duplications" and "Some Fun Just Can't Be Downloaded." Maybe these will do more for the anti-piracy effort that anything else.), a world premiere featurette and a Easter egg of Dangle and Junior in the alley.

The theatrical version has the writers/director commentary, an alternate ending, three of the extended scenes, a making-of featurette and an Easter egg of Paul Rudd talking to deputies. That's right, folks, if you want all the extras available, you have to fork over $59.96 for both versions. Isn't there a crime in there somewhere?

If you want more, the Critics Tomatometer had Reno 911!: Miami at 36%.

The show itself scores better, with 8.9 out of 10 on TV.com ratings. The first three seasons of the show are on DVD already. Here's season 3, and an uncensored compilation.
