High-def hullaballoo

Warner and Universal are making giant leaps into HD DVD.

On Nov. 28 (prebook Oct. 24), Warner will deliver the first high-def TV title: Smallville: The Complete Fifth Season HD ($79.98). (HBO announced The Sopranos first, but the disc has been delayed.) Smallville HD comes with the  HD-exclusive “In-Program Experience: Behind the Story” feature on the making of the premiere episode.

And Universal releases the giant King Kong on HD DVD ($39.98) on Nov. 14 (order now) with what Universal calls “U-Control” bonus features. Through a “My Scenes” feature, users will be able to bookmark scenes by pressing the “B” button on their remotes to store the scenes. Plus viewers will be able to watch cast interviews and behind-the-scenes footage while the movie plays.

New for Blu-ray

Over on the Blu-ray side, Fox and Buena Vista will bow their first simultaneous releases in high-def and standard def. Fox’s The Devil Wears Prada ($39.98) strolls the cat walk on Dec. 12, while Buena Vista’s Invincible scores on Dec. 19. Prada offers commentary, 15 deleted scenes and trivia pop-ups. Invincible has a featurette about the movie’s real football player and two commentaries, along with the high-def-exclusive featurette “Recreating the Vet.”

Catalog for both

Fox also is releasing Blu-ray versions of Flight of the Phoenix and Rising Sun (order now) on Dec. 5 and Transporter 2 on Dec. 26, all priced at $39.98. And Universal has a slew of catalog titles coming to high-def before the end of the year: Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas (order now, street Nov. 21), An American Werewolf in London (order now, street Nov. 28) and The Scorpion King (prebook Nov. 7, street Dec. 19) as HD DVD Combos ($34.98 each), and on HD DVD, Dune, Meet the Parents and The Mummy on Nov. 28 (order now); Field of Dreams and The Hulk on Dec. 12 (prebook Oct. 31); and Casino on Dec. 19 (prebook Nov. 7), all priced at $29.98. Let the party begin.
