Pan's Labyrinth
March 12, 2007

New Line is bringing Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth to disc on May 15 (prebook April 10) in a single-disc edition ($28.98) and a two-disc set ($34.99. (No high-def yet. New Line's staying out of that war for now.)

I'm ashamed to say I haven't seen this yet, but I'm a fan of del Toro's style. And being a big kid at heart, I love a good fairy tale. But the movie got a 96% rating among critics' reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and won three Oscars (art direction, cinematography and makeup). It grossed $32 million, which isn't bad for a foreign-language film.

Anyway, del Toro is a fan of DVD, and New Line appears to be outdoing itself with the extras (this coming from the studio that brought us the massive, watch-all-weekend-and-you're-still-not-done Lord of the Rings Extended Editions).

Here's the lineup for the single-disc:

·Video prologue from director Guillermo del Toro

·Feature audio commentary from director Guillermo del Toro

·DVD-ROM content with Spanish & English Screenplays, synchronized storyboards and photo galleries

And here's the lineup for the two-disc set (that's right, keep scrolling):

·Video prologue from director Guillermo del Toro

·Feature audio commentary from director Guillermo del Toro

·“The Power of Myth” featurette on mythology and the origin of the characters

·“DVD Comics: Giant Toad, The Pale Man, The Fairies and Pan” comic book artists’ interpretations of characters from the film

·“The Faun and the Fairies” featurette on visual effects

·“The Color and the Shape” featurette on the colors and textures in del Toro’s films

·“The Lullaby” 2 featurettes on the film’s musical theme

·The Charlie Rose Show interview featuring filmmakers del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men) and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel)

·Interactive Director’s notes and sketches, including a video prologue by del Toro

·Storyboard/Thumbnail Comparisons

·Galleries: DDT creature design/Production design/Production scrapbook

·VFX plate comparison: GDT and the Green Fairy

·DVD-ROM content with Spanish & English screenplays, synchronized storyboards and photo galleries
