Hannah Montana promotion
April 28, 2008
Hannah Montana doesn't need extra promotion to push its DVDs. The show has a loyal following that took its Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds 3-D Concert to $64.5 million in theaters.
But Vanity Fair's photo of Montana star Miley Cyrus could bring more attention to the kids show, albeit not the kind of attention Disney wants. And just at the wrong time, as Best of Both Worlds comes to DVD and Blu-ray on Aug. 19.
Now, I'm all for freedom of the press, and I don't think Disney needs me to fight its battles. But seriously, Vanity Fair. She's 15 years old! Is it really necessary to take, much less publish, a photo of her topless and covered with a sheet? Aren't there plenty of older actresses who you could feature in a photo shoot like this? There are plenty who are 20+, even plenty who are younger than 20 but at least of legal age. Because, let's be honest here, Vanity Fair is trying to sell sex with this photo, and while I don't mean to get moralistic, it seems that Vanity Fair shouldn't have to stoop to selling sex with a 15-year-old.
Hannah Montana is a model show for many preteen and teen girls. Let's hope they don't follow the real-life Miley Cyrus and grow up too fast.
