New Orleans Music in Exile DVD
August 8, 2007

I'm a little late on this one, as it streeted yesterday, but a friend in my office, Cheryl Biggs, sent me this as a title worthy of a mention, and I agree:

Starz has issued New Orleans Music in Exile on DVD, a documentary about the healing of the city and its musical community after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. It's produced by Robert Mugge, or Last of the Mississippi Jukes and Deep Blues.

Among the New Orleans musicians featured are Dr. John, Marcia Ball, Cyril Neville, The Iguanas, Ernie Bo (the press release says Ernie Bo, but I think they might mean Eddie Bo), Kermit Ruffins, Irma Thomas, Cowboy Mouth, Theresa Andersson, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux and The ReBirth Brass Band.

The disc is priced at $19.97 and includes the following special features:

  • JON CLEARY "A History of New Orleans Piano"
  • BIG CHIEF MONK BOUDREAUX "Meet the Boys on the Battlefront
  • MARCIA BALL "That's What I Get"
  • PAPA MALI "Keep Happy"
  • Beatin Path "The Weight of the World"
  • THERESA ANDERSSON "Lie To Me"
  • WORLD LEADER PRETEND "A Grammarian Stuck in a Medical Drama"
  • A New Orleans Rescue – Storytelling by Dave Spizale
