WKRP DVD music
May 1, 2007
Here's a tidbit for WKRP in Cincinatti fans looking to get the DVD--The episodes have extensive music substitutions, commonly make by studios to save on song licensing costs, will hurt sales.
VB reporter Susanne Ault asked them about it and here's her report:
Fox handled substitutions with utmost care, said the studio’s senior VP of marketing communications Steve Feldstein.
“The original [WKRP] creative team was involved in making the necessary changes to allow for its release on DVD,” Feldstein said.
TV blogger Jaime Weinman has meticulously counted about 50 song substitutions in the set, when comparing a review DVD copy with older tape recordings at www.macleans.ca/weinman.
A rabid WKRP fan, Weinman calls this “extremely distracting,” because the show’s humor often revolved around the music played at the radio station.
Virgin’s Bell admits, “Music was really integral to WKRP…[but] overall, it is one of those shows that is looked at as one of the great sitcoms that hasn’t yet come to DVD. A lot of people have been waiting for it.”
You be the judge. The
disc was released last week.
