Breach DVD and HD DVD Combo
April 30, 2007
Missed this in theaters, but I gotta say, the trailers made it look good.
Based on a true story,
Breach stars Ryan Phillippe (here's the
full cast list on IMDB) as an FBI staffer who discovers his boss, played by the great Chris Cooper, is selling secrets to the Soviet Union. The bastard!
I love these cat and mouse tales, and judging by Rotten Tomatoes
Critics Tomatometer, it lived up to its premise. It averaged a very nice 83%.
Breach grossed $33 million in theaters, and is bound to get lots of attention on DVD from those who -- like me -- missed it in theaters, as well as those who liked it on the big screen.
Universal is bringing out the DVD ($29.98) and HD DVD Combo ($39.98) on June 12 (prebook May 8). I suspect this will also be a nice one for HD DVD too. That's how we'll probably check it out.
The studo has also done a great job with the extras (both versions have the same package).
As well as deleted and alternate scenes, there's a commentary with writer/director Billy Ray and the real-life Eric O'Neill, played by Phillippe in the movie. Nice! Plus there's
Dateline's "The Mole," which aired on March 5, 2001, and presumably covers the real-life story. (It's coincidental that
Dateline airs on NBC, which is part of Universal.)
And there's a featurette called "Breaching the Truth," which we suspect is a making-of featurette, and an "Anatomy of a Character Brought to You by Volkswagen."
So Universal is selling it's special features now. It was inevitable.
