The Water Horse and Walk Hard
February 13, 2008
So, given that I've been sick with the flu this week, here's a couple announcements I missed.
Sony will release The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep, the sweet-looking movie about the legend of Loch Ness, on April 1 (prebook Feb. 21) on DVD ($28.96) and Blu-ray ($38.96).
It grossed $40 million in theaters, and it has big potential as a strong family film on disc. It's from Walden Media (The Chronicles of Narnia) and has special effects by Weta (Lord of the Rings), so that's some cache.
Extras: deleted scenes and six featurettes on standard-def, plus the online game "The Water Horse: Virtual Crusoe Game" on Blu-ray.
The press releases look good. Here's the down low from the press release:
Creating Crusoe is an exploration of the physical and special effects that went into creating the water horse, Crusoe; Myths and Legends is a mixture of thoughts and opinions about the origins of the Water Horse myth - does he really he exist?; Setting the Scene looks at the production design and the different locations used to create an authentic Scottish environment; in The Characters, the cast and director Jay Russell discuss the characters from the film and the challenges of playing them; in The Story, director Russell discusses the process of bringing Dick King-Smith's book to the screen; and Water Work: Creating the Water Horse shows Alex Etel’s amazing work underwater to create one of the most difficult scenes in the movie.
Sony has signed Carl's Jr. and Hardees as promotional partners. A Water Horse burger perhaps? Let's hope not.
And then Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, also from Sony, will bow April 8 (prebook March 6) also on DVD and Blu-ray.
The $18 million-grossing comedy starring John C. Reilly will be released in theatrical and unrated versions on DVD and unrated on BD. The theatrical single-disc will be $28.95, with the two-disc unrated at $29.96, the BD at $43.95 (WOW!) and PSP at $24.94 (also wow, but many PSP releases are priced this high).
