Anime on HD DVD
March 22, 2007
OVA "Freedom" Vol. 1 will be released in an HD DVD/DVD Twin set pm June 26 (prebook May 22), the first HD DVD title from Bandai.
It will be released in Japan and the U.S. the same day, and priced at $39.99 here.
The press materials say Bandai is "vigorously" preparing high-def formats, and plans to release more title on HD DVD and Blu-ray in Japan. Presumably they mean the U.S. as well; if not, start petitioning now.
Ok, so what's an HD DVD/DVD Twin? Well, presumably like Universal's HD DVD/DVD Combo with HD DVD on one side and DVD on the other. But reading the press materials, I'm not so sure.
HD DVD/DVD Twin is apparently a collaboration between Memory-Tech Corp and Microsoft to improve image quality for the HD DVD video compression technology for the anime market. O K. The press releases says: "The three companies have fine-tuned VC1 specifically to achieve higher visual quality for Japanese anime." How much higher do they need? Hmmm
Anyway, it also has HDi for picture-in-picture, etc.
