The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor DVD, Blu-ray
October 22, 2008

Dec. 16 is Mummy day for Universal. The studio will release the latest Brendan Fraser-starring movie in the franchise, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, that day in a single-DVD version (widescreen or fullscreen priced at $29.98), a two-DVD Deluxe Edition (widescreen priced at $34.98) and on Blu-ray (widescreen, $39.98).

Prebook is Nov. 4.

But wait! I said Universal is making Dec. 16 Mummy Day, and it is by also bringing out The Mummy Trilogy, with all three Fraser adventures -- The Mummy, The Mummy Returns and the $102 million-grossing Dragon Emperor -- in one box, priced at $64.98 for DVD and $94.98 for Blu-ray.

I know what you're thinking: Didn't those just come out, again in the case of the DVD versions, in July when Dragon Emperor hit theaters? Well, yes. But now they'll be in the same box with Dragon Emperor. And if you already invested back in June, don't worry, they're the same discs, just packaged with the new movie. So if you just buy Emperor by itself, all you'll be missing is the box.

But wait! I meant it when I said Mummy Day. Universal also is delivering The Mummy: The Animated Series - Volume 1, 2 and 3 that day, each prced at $14.98 on DVD only. This is the TV series based on the first two movies. It aired on Kids WB!.

Ok, that's all the Mummy releases that day. But what does the new one have to offer?

The Dragon Emperor single-disc just has deleted scenes and commentary by director Rob Cohen.

The two-disc version has that plus a second disc with a bunch of featurettes:

• The Making of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
• From City to Desert
• Legacy of the Terra Cotta
• A Call to Action: The Casting Process
• Preparing for Battle with Brendan Fraser and Jet Li
• Jet Li: Crafting the Emperor Mummy
• Creating New and Supernatural Worlds

Blu-ray has all that plus scene-sharing and exclusive content through BD Live and Universal's signature U-Control, with picture-in-picture, mummy stats, visual commentary with Cohen and "The Dragon Emperor's Challenge."

Both the two-DVD and Blu-ray versions also offer a downloadable digital copy of the movie.

Forgotten what all the fuss is about? Here's the Dragon Emperor trailer:
