300 HD DVD, Blu-ray and DVD
May 17, 2007
Now here's a title that should look spectacular on high-def. If you didn't see the movie in the theaters -- if you're one of the few who didn't help it gross $208 million -- check out the trailer. And Warner has cooked up some extra special extras for the HD DVD version.
300 will be released on all three formats on July 31 (prebook June 19) priced at $28.98 for the single-disc standard-def (available in fullscreen or widescreen versions), $34.99 for the two-disc standard-def special edition, $39.99 for the HD DVD combo (DVD on one side, HD DVD on the other) and $34.99 on Blu-ray.
You might wonder why HD DVD is more expensive than Blu-ray. The answer is, you get a lot more with HD DVD.
Both versions have additional scenes in high-def, three high-def featurettes ("Frank Miller's Vision Realized on Film," "300 Spartans--Fact or Fiction: The Shocking Life of a Spartan Revealed" and "Who Were the Spartans?: How the Actors Built Their Characters Based on Spartan Customs") and on-set Webisodes.
HD DVD adds mobile downloads from the Web; a create your own montage of your favorite scenes feature; a strategy game called "Vengeance and Valor," where users lead the Spartans into battle and test your knowledge of tactics and strategy; and blue-screen picture-in-picture, where director Zack Snyder compares the pre-CGI-enhanced version to the finished film. Very cool!
Blu-ray also has a commentary by Snyder.
The two-disc standard-def set offer commentary, deleted scenes, the three featurettes (albeit not in high-def, obviously), the Webisodes and photo stills from the production.
