The Madagascar sequel, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa will move it move it to DVD and Blu-ray on Friday, Feb. 6, another non-traditional-Tuesday date for Paramount. Prebook is Friday, Jan. 9. DreamWorks Animation's $170 million-grossing animated movie will likely be the biggest title for the new year, after the rash of summer blockbusters that hit shelves in the fourth quarter. Paramount also will continue the double-pack it started with Kung Fu Panda, releasing Escape 2 Africa in a Move It! Move It! Double DVD Pack with a second disc that includes two new animated adventures from the new Nickelodeon series The Penguins of Madagascar (I smell cross-promotion!). The Move It pack will retai...Read More Ghostbusters Blu-ray

Changeling DVD, Blu-ray
Posted by Samantha Clark on January 6, 2009
Universal will deliver the $35 million-grossing Changeling to DVD and Blu-ray on Feb. 17 (prebook Jan. 6 - today!). Directed by Clint Eastwood, Changeling stars Angelina Jolie as a woman who has lost her son and fights the authorities when they return a boy who's not her son. It has been nominated for two Golden Globe nominations (Jolie for best actress in a drama and best original score, composed by Eastwood), so it could be a winner when the awards are handed out on Jan. 11. (They'll air live on NBC.) The DVD, with two featurettes ("Partners in Crime: Clint Eastwood...Read More Ricky Gervais: Out of England DVD
Posted by Samantha Clark on January 5, 2009
Ricky Gervais has come a long way since making audiences laugh and cringe in the original British The Office. His American TV stand-up debut, Ricky Gervais: Out of England aired on HBO last year and will be released on DVD March 31 (prebook Feb. 24). The show -- it's very funny, caught it on HBO -- was filmed at the WaMu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The DVD will be priced at $19.97 and distributed by HBO and Warner. Jason Statham is at it again. In Transporter 3, Statham reprises his role as the ex-Special Forces agent who helps people and gets himself in and out of trouble along the way. Lionsgate's actioner has grossed $29 million in theaters and will bow on DVD and Blu-ray on March 10 (prebook Feb. 11) in a quick 12-week turnaround. It will be released in three versions: single DVD for $29.95, two-DVD for $34.98 and two-disc Blu-ray for $39.99. Both the two-DVD and Blu-ray versions will have digital copy. The 1953 The Robe, about the man in charge of the group assigned to crucify Christ, was nominated for five Academy Awards, including best picture, actor and cinematography, and won for art direction and costume design. Fox is loading up the new versions. The DVD will offer:
The End of America DVD
Posted by Samantha Clark on December 24, 2008
Ok, I know it's Christmas Eve and I should be showcasing some Christmas title, but all of those were announced months ago. As we're always looking ahead in the DVD business, here's a title that could interest politically minded consumers with the Inauguration of President Elect Barack Obama just weeks away. Being released on Inauguration Day (Jan. 20; order now), as the U.S. brings in the next Administration, IndiePix's The End of America is a documentary that looks at the policy changes the Bush Administration enacted that have (and I'm quoting the press release here) "greatly limited individual liberties while increasing the power of government." The documentary, made by the award-winning filmmakers of The Devil Came On Horseback and ...Read More Big Stan DVD, Blu-ray

Roy Schneider's latest comedy, Big Stan, finds him playing the role of a con-man who, when he's about to go into prison, hires a martial arts master (hilariously David Carradine, of course) to teach him how to survive. Despite brief theatrical runs overseas, Big Stan didn't make it to the big screen in the U.S., making it a DVD premiere here. When it premieres on DVD, however, it will also bow on Blu-ray, priced at $24.98 and $34.98, respectively. Oh, and that when is March 24 (prebook Feb. 17). Warner's special features will be commentary with Schneider (who also produced and directed the movie) and actors Buddy Lewis and Salvator Xuereb; a making-of featurette and outtakes. Despite the lack of a theatrical release, with Sch...Read More High School Musical 3 DVD, Blu-ray

The third movie in this juggernaut of a tween franchise comes to DVD and Blu-ray Feb. 17 (prebook Jan. 6). Zac Efron, Ashley Tisdale, Vanessa Hudgens and Lucas Grabeel (among others) are all back in High School Musical 3: Senior Year, which will be priced at $29.99 for its single DVD, $34.99 for its two-DVD set and $39.99 for a three-disc Blu-ray version. The first movie in the franchise to be released theatrically (the first and second installments premiered on the Disney Channel), HSM3 grossed a not too shabby $89 million. The first two were both hits on DVD, so expect the same from this third outing. All of the versions of Disney's title will include cast goodbyes (sniff), but the two-DVD also will offer sing-alongs, bloopers...Read More Will Faith-based Have Blu Passion?
Posted by Susanne Ault on December 18, 2008
Fox is releasing one of its most successful movies of all time, The Passion of the Christ, on Blu-ray on Feb. 17. Back when Fox released the title on DVD in 2004, the studio was hoping the movie would spur a late rush of DVD player adoption. With its serious religious themes, Passion's big screen debut wound up attracting many people who normally attend church activities over mainstream entertainment. It's understood that many of these first-time movie fans also likely bought players in order to enjoy Passion whenever they wanted at home. I wonder if this same core Passion fan base will return to stores to pick up Blu-ray players now? Their DVD players are a good four years old now, and may be in need of an upgrade. Passion's extreme imagery will also likely prove most moving in the Blu-ray ...Read More Canterbury's Law DVD
Posted by Samantha Clark on December 15, 2008
With Juliana Margulies and Aiden Quinn, what's not to like? Apparently quite a bit, because this TV show was canceled after only a few airings. I watched it and liked, though, and Canterbury's Law: The Complete Series will now be available in a two-DVD set on Feb. 24 (prebook Jan. 22; DVD $29.95). Sony has left the discs pretty sparse, offering just the six episodes and previews. In case you didn't catch it, the show's about an attorney (Margulies) who puts her career on the line to take unpopular cases. All this while her and her husband deal with the death of their son.
