Summit Home Entertainment has acquired Iraq documentary Brothers at War and plans to street it on DVD on Jan. 12, the same time the studio bows the feature The Hurt Locker.Oscar pundits have long been eyeing The Hurt Locker as a likely Best Picture candidate, especially as the 2010 awards will double the nominee slots to 10. The Hurt Locker bowed in limited release in June, far out from the typical fall/winter rush of Oscar-pedigree films. But its gripping storyline about a U.S. Army bomb unit in Iraq has squarely won over critics. It looks like Summit will further drill that point home, making Hurt a bigger event release with its Brothers at War companion. The marketing will likely work both ways with Brothers performing better attached to Hurt than if the doc...Read More

Santa Monica was once a pretty scary place. That's one of the lasting impressions of Dogtown and Z-Boys, the 2001 documentary Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing on Blu-ray Jan. 5. It's a fascinating lesson for both the uninitiated who probably think the beachside California town has always been a haven for the well-heeled as well as for an Angeleno like myself who remembers the days when venturing south of the Pier was a really bad idea. Dogtown, which inspired the 2005 feature film Lords of Dogtown, ostensibly is about a group of Santa Monica-and Venice-reared mi...Read More

With a bunch of critical attention behind it, Sony's Moon will come rise on DVD and Blu-ray on Jan. 12 (prebook Dec. 10). Starring Sam Rockwell, Moon earned $5 million in a limited theatrical release. The psychological sci-fi movie follows Rockewll as an astronaut who has been living and working on the moon with his only companion a computer voiced by Kevin Spacey. Rockwell is about to return to Earth when an accident happens that adds to Rockwell's growing paranoia. As expected with a story like this, a lot of work ...Read More

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs might not have huge names in its voicecast or Disney, Pixar or DreamWorks in its producing credits, but Sony's animated movie, based on a popular children's book, grossed $120 million at the box office. And I'll bet a bunch hamburgers, that it'll do very well when it hits DVD and Blu-ray on Jan. 5 too. The movie probably would have made a splash in the fourth quarter, but Sony has avoided competition from Up on Nov. 10, G-Force on Dec. 15 (both from Disney) and Universal's...Read More

The latest film from the creator of that brilliant bit of comedy cinema Office Space, Extract is coming to DVD and Blu-ray Dec. 22 (prebook Nov. 10). If you missed it in theaters, Extract, in my opinion, doesn't have the same hilarious edge as Office Space, but it has some very funny moments and boasts Jason Bateman, Mila Kunis, Kristen Wiig and ...Read More
