Redbox moves online

Kiosk company launches rental reservation option on Web site

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 9/21/2006

SEPT. 21 | Redbox’s online rental reservation option will go live Sept. 25, at which time the service will let customers choose a title on the company’s Web site (http://www.redbox.com/) before picking it up at their preferred kiosk location.

Customers provide valid payment card information online, and their selected DVDs are guaranteed to be in stock at the chosen location. If the selected kiosk does not carry the customer’s designated DVDs, an alternative Redbox spot will be suggested.

Online reserved DVDs can be returned at any Redbox location, similar to discs rented in-person. Redbox officials hope to become competitive with dominant online rental company Netflix.

“Other rental companies leave you guessing what movie will arrive and more importantly when,” Redbox VP of marketing Greg Waring said. “Redbox believes in customer convenience and applies real-time inventory technology to make renting the hottest new releases for only $1 a night, fun and, most importantly, guess-free.”

Disc rental machine company DVDXpress recently bowed a similar Internet reservation option.
