NOV. 2 | DIGITAL: Hulu gained share of the U.S. online video market as the long-form video site launched last year by News Corp. and NBC Universal boosted the number of videos viewed in September by about 20% from August, according to a ComScore report.
Google still widened its lead in online video popularity as its YouTube unit continued to account for about 40% of all online videos viewed in the U.S., while Fox Interactive Media also gained viewers, the report said.
Hulu’s 583 million online videos shown in September accounted for 2.2% of the market, making it the second-most-popular online video site behind YouTube, ComScore said in a statement. Hulu leapfrogged Microsoft and Viacom Digital in online video popularity.
Still, Google Web sites extended their online video lead, boosting their videos viewed by about 4% to more than 10.4 billion, ComScore said. YouTube has been steadily gaining viewers since April, when the company said it would start offering free full-length movies and TV shows on its site after it reached deals with content providers such as Sony, Lionsgate and Starz.
Overall, Americans watched 26 billion online videos in September, up 2.4% from August, ComScore said. News Corp.’s Fox Interactive Media increased its videos shown by 44%, making it the third-most-popular group of online video sites, while Microsoft’s sites had a 23% drop in videos viewed.
