Orphan - DVD Review

By Ed Hulse -- Video Business, 9/21/2009

WARNER
Street: Oct. 27
Prebook: Sept. 22
> Demon child thriller transcends formula by virtue of expert acting and direction.

This “bad seed” shocker stars Vera Farmiga (The Departed) and Peter Sarsgaard (The Mysteries of Pittsburgh) as parents who adopt a brainy, seemingly perfect 9-year-old girl (newcomer Isabelle Fuhrman in a surprisingly mature, nuanced performance). But terrible things always seem to be happening around her. Despite the recycled clichés, Orphan succeeds by virtue of its intensity and integrity. The creative team obviously approached this subject as though it was the first of its kind, and that sort of dedication usually pays off.

Shelf Talk: You’ve seen many films of this type over the years—The Bad Seed, The Good Son, the various Omen movies and so on. Orphan is more of the same, but the style of up-and-coming Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra and indie film regulars Farmiga and Sarsgaard give it some extra cachet.

Horror, color, R (mature themes, violence, language, sexual situations), 123 min., DVD $28.98, UPC: 883929048694; BD $35.99, UPC: 883929049400
Extras: additional scenes, alternate ending, BD adds featurette, digital copy
