Inkheart - Blu-ray Review

> Fantasy novel adaptation looks sharp on Blu-ray.

Inkheart scene with Brendan Fraser
Effects-laden fantasy films show off the premier audio and video of Blu-ray, and Iain Softley’s Inkheart is no exception. The eyes of the dark, evil Shadow are piercing orange flames and its screams are so filled with bass, the vibrations could probably topple a chair. Fans of the movie’s source material, the novels by Cornelia Funke, will enjoy all the book-related special features. Funke is the star of one featurette in which she discusses her inspiration and writing process. In another, she begins a story with one line that’s then continued by members of the cast and crew. Young star Eliza Bennett also reads a section of the book that didn’t make it into the movie.

Shelf Talk: Inkheart didn’t score at the box office as well as other children’s book adaptations, but it’s a fun fantasy that fans of the genre will enjoy, particularly those who put the series of books on the bestseller list. Even though it’s priced at a premium over the DVD, the Blu-ray comes in a combo pack with a DVD for kids’ DVD players and an exclusive digital copy.

Family, color, PG (fantasy adventure action, some scary moments, brief language), 106 min., BD/DVD combo $35.99, reviewed on a PlayStation 3 with 118-inch Carada screen, Sony VW60 projector and HDMI connection
Extras: deleted scenes, featurettes, digital copy, BD Live, commentary on BD Live
Director: Iain Softley
First Run: W, Jan. 2009, $17.3 mil.
