JUNE 3 | INDIE FILM GUIDE: This July, the moon could be one of the most talked about topics on Earth. Retailers looking for promotional opportunities can note that July marks the 40th anniversary of the first human to walk on the moon. July 20, 1969, was the date that astronaut Neil Armstrong danced the original moon walk.
The event will once again be in the public eye as countless TV shows will commemorate the event. As for the number of moon landing documentaries that DVD suppliers will have available before July 20, the sky will be the limit.

On July 14 (prebook June 16), Image’s Criterion label will release the documentary For All Mankind in a new DVD edition ($29.95) and for the first time on Blu-ray Disc ($39.95). The documentary covers all 24 men who traveled to the moon.
Acorn Media is about to release Apollo 11: A Night to Remember (DVD $24.99), which presents archival footage of the first moon landing.
Another distributor with moon titles in its DVD universe is Warner Home Video, which offers several programs from its independent labels. WHV’s National Geographic Entertainment recently released Direct From the Moon, featuring Buzz Aldrin and NASA scientists along with footage of the moon and Earth taken from the Kaguya lunar orbiter.
A Signature Edition of HBO Home Entertainment’s epic From the Earth to the Moon was released earlier this year. HBO also released the IMAX film Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon, which shows viewers what only 12 men have actually done before.
Another 40th anniversary edition of a moon landing documentary, Journey to the Moon, will be available July 14 from Mill Creek Entertainment (prebook June 16; DVD $14.98). And Timeless Media issued Man on the Moon With Walter Cronkite in a 40th anniversary edition earlier this year.
