JUNE 1 | DVD FOR KIDS: Kids spend more on games, movies, musicWhen kids have their own money to spend, electronic games, movies and music are among the most popular items they purchase.
According to a January survey by Weekly Reader Research, games ranked second only to food/candy as items kids ages 6-12 spent their money on during the previous three months, followed by fashion, with movies and music rounding out the Top 5.
Electronic devices such as computers, videogame systems, portable digital music and video players (including iPods) and cell phones are becoming more popular for kids to use for various forms of entertainment content.
According to an NPD Group survey last October of moms with kids ages 2-14, kids are using a variety of content on entertainment devices. Although games are still the predominant category, music is being used on devices by 60% of kids and video of various types by about 33%.
