MAY 21 | PHYSICAL: In a unique appeal to PlayStation 3 owners, Warner Home Video will release a second Blu-ray Disc version of Watchmen that includes the full videogame The End is Nigh.
The movie/game package holds two Blu-ray discs, one of which contains the Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment videogame Watchmen: The End is Nigh and the other featuring the movie Watchmen: Director’s Cut. This combo set, with pricing not yet specified, will launch in July, at or near the title’s July 21 bow on DVD and Blu-ray.
The standard Watchmen Blu-ray release (prebook June 6, $35.99) also will hold the director’s cut of Watchmen, containing 25 extra minutes over the theatrical version, plus 11 making-of Watchmen shorts, Chemical Romance’s music video for “Desolation Row” and the studio’s debut of ‘Maximum Movie Mode,’ in which director Zack Snyder will appear as the film is rolling to explain various ins and outs of the creation process. Also on the standard Blu-ray edition is a new Web-enabled feature expanding the community screening experience to users’ Facebook friend network.
It’s unclear which features will be on the movie/game Blu-ray version.
Two years ago, Sony Computer Entertainment bowed a similar Blu-ray combo set with game Stranglehold and movie Hard Boiled. But studios have not often packaged Blu-ray movies and full videogames together.
The Watchmen Blu-ray movie/game package is the first of its kind from Warner.
In March, Warner offered the first part of The End is Nigh as a download for various systems, including Xbox Live, Windows PC and PlayStation Network. Warner will make the second part of The End is Night available for download for these same platforms in July.
The game disc in the Watchmen Blu-ray will include both installments.
The End is Nigh recalls the violent combat scenes that were significant to Watchmen’s story line. However, the game’s plot starts more than 10 years before the movie unspools. Characters Rorschach and Nite Owl play big roles in the game.
