APRIL 21 | Dell has begun shipping its first desktop computers with internal Sonic Solutions Qflix DVD burners, which allow consumers to burn select movie downloads to disc.
Dell is including the internal drives on its Studio XPS Desktop, Studio XPS 435, Studio Desktop and Studio Slim Desktop. Last year, Dell became the first company to sell external Qflix drives, followed quickly by Pioneer.
Qflix drives are the only DVD burners on the market that burn movies using CSS copy protection, the same copy protection used on commercial DVDs.
So far, CinemaNow, also part of Sonic Solutions, is the only movie download site that offers downloads that can be burned to disc. The site offers burnable downloads on select movies.
Sonic is in talks to make download-to-burn movies available from Warner Home Entertainment Group’s recently announced Warner Archives DVD-on-demand service. Sonic is working with Allied Vaughn, which is manufacturing on demand DVDs ordered through Warner Archive, while its CinemaNow division is handling digital distribution for Warner Archive movie downloads.
