Digital distribution reduces award show's environmental impact

March 24 | The Juno Awards, Canada’s equivalent of the Grammys, turned to a digital distribution company to cut event costs while cutting down on its environmental impact.Through the use of Yangaroo’s Digital Media Distribution System (DMDS), The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences facilitated the judging process for about 2,000 people online. Jury and Academy members were able to review content by making use of Yangaroo’s latest iteration of its distribution system, DMDS 5.0.
Once downloaded, the music accessible to voting members for Juno judging could be burned onto a CD or uploaded to an iPod. Promotional materials that were submitted along with specific songs also could be reviewed online. Finally, individuals placed their votes online using the same system.
All content was protected by such anti-piracy measures as high-value encryption and watermarking; both are incorporated into Yangaroo’s DMDS 5.0.
CARAS’s switch to online judging for the Junos eliminated the waste and shipping costs associated with the 15,000 CDs used in the past.
This is the first in a three-year partnership between CARAS and Yangaroo for the latter company’s services.
The Juno Awards will be broadcast live on March 29 from Vancouver.
