MARCH 14 | Shorewood Packaging has been awarded three separate endorsements for its East Flat Rock, N.C., Weaverville, N.C., and Louisville, Ky., manufacturing facilities, certificates guaranteeing the socially and environmentally sound practices of the forests from which the company obtains its raw materials.
These Chain-of-Custody (COC) certifications assure clients and consumers that the paper used in their packaging was purchased from responsible sources. The Shorewood plants received the endorsements from several watchdog organizations devoted to overseeing responsible forest management around the world. They are:
*The Forest Stewardship Council, a worldwide group that prohibits the use of hazardous pesticides and protects the rights of indigenous people tied to the forests.
*Sustainable Forestry Initiative, the North American system of forest management that includes steps to protect water resources, endangered species and unique forest environments.
*Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, the international non-profit working, through government cooperation, to certify sustainable management in 85% of the world’s forest area.
Shorewood will now begin labeling packaging, paper components or paperboard leaving its facilities with the appropriate certification.
Going forward, the company hopes to secure COC certifications for all of the its manufacturing facilities, beginning with most of the centers in North America and Europe, as well as the Guangzhou plant in China. Shorewood expects facilities in Mexico, China and South Korea to receive their certification by year’s end.
