> Sweet comedy about a boy’s fascination with cheerleading.
This modest comedy follows a bright, enthusiastic 11-year-old boy (Lurie Poston) whose obsession with dolls, dresses and cheerleading has his hard-working single mom (Carrie Preston) worried about his sexual orientation. She persuades him to join the school wrestling team, a move that only adds to the lad’s frustration and induces a kindly gay neighbor (Michael Emerson) to offer some useful advice: Let the boy find his own way. Ready? OK! handles its theme lightheartedly and with unusual dexterity.
Shelf Talk: Already a film-fest favorite, Ready? OK! could be a crossover success for veteran niche supplier Wolfe. The cast features recognizable TV stars, including True Blood’s Preston, Lost’s Emerson and Grey’s Anatomy’s Kali Rocha, all of whom lend the film some marquee appeal. And since Ready’s sexual-ambiguity theme is presented in a warm and fuzzy manner, it’s non-threatening to mainstream audiences.
