> Historic features add to attraction of Oscar nominee on Blu-ray.
Clint Eastwood’s disturbing 2008 feature might not be the best visual example of Blu-ray’s high-definition picture, as many scenes have a filtered quality that complements the period subject matter. Still, the film looks beautiful and the screams that are heard in the psych ward scenes sound piercing. History buffs could be attracted to the Blu-ray over the DVD because of the interesting “Archives” and “Los Angeles: Then and Now” picture-in-picture tracks, which show old photos and newspaper clippings related to the film’s late ’20s and ’30s setting. Universal also included its usual U-Control picture-in-picture track that pops up behind-the-scenes interviews with Eastwood and others, as well as two entertaining featurettes, which also are on the DVD.
Shelf Talk: Fans of Angelina Jolie and Eastwood’s similar-in-style Million Dollar Baby will want to have the intense Changeling in their library. Although the movie missed out on a Best Picture Oscar nomination, it received three nods, including one for Jolie as Best Actress. Its release five days before the awards ceremony could bring business from viewers who didn’t see it in theaters.
