Movie Gallery closes Oregon distribution center

About 200 jobs cut at Wilsonville plant

By Danny King -- Video Business, 1/26/2009

JAN. 26 | Movie Gallery is closing its Oregon distribution center, resulting in the loss of about 200 jobs.

The company will move distribution operations from its Wilsonville, Ore., plant to its Nashville, Tenn., facility, Movie Gallery said in a statement late last week. All but 30 of the 230 people will be laid off, with the remaining moved into new positions within the company.

The Nashville distribution plant employs about 200 people.

The second-largest video retailer behind Blockbuster, Movie Gallery has tried to cut costs and improve its financial performance since exiting bankruptcy last May, seven months after filing Chapter 11. Since then, Movie Gallery has overhauled its leadership while attempting to increase sales by boosting exposure of its Hollywood Video brand in the western U.S.

Movie Gallery's corporate offices in Wilsonville, which employ about 400 people, will not be affected.
