Neurotic mule deer Elliot and his lumbering bear pal Boog are back in this sequel to 2006’s Open Season, but original voice talent Ashton Kutcher (Elliot) and Martin Lawrence (Boog) are not. They’re replaced by lesser lights Mike Epps (Boog) and Joel McHale (Elliot), who’s seriously channeling Ben Stiller. The (mis)adventure starts when dachshund Mr. Weenie (Cody Cameron) is recovered by his human owners. To save him, the forest friends go up against a group of pampered pets, led by toy poodle Fifi (Crispin Glover). Lots of mild scatological humor and jokes about the size of broken-horned Elliot’s rack ensue. Five interactive games are engaging.
Shelf Talk: The original Open Season made $84 million in theaters, so this sequel should still enjoy some awareness. Sony is going all out with a theatrical-sized marketing campaign, including promotions with Crayola and Red Robin restaurants, and is heavily merchandising the title in 940 Petco stores.
